Table Grace

Table Grace
The longer I go, the less I know…
And sometimes it feels
Like falling.

Sometimes I stand,
Waiting to receive, thinking,
“Except for sighs too deep,
I bring nothing to the table.”
Then comes percolating
Through bread and wine,
The words, “For you…
My body, my blood…
Me FOR you…
Now…As you are…
For free.
You cannot bring to this table,
You only receive.
Let my grace
Be sufficient for you.”

Then no matter
What I might or might not bring,
Again, am I able to sing,
“Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One,
Give thanks because he’s given
Jesus Christ, His Son.
And now, let the weak [in faith] say I am strong,
Let the poor [in spirit] say I am rich
Because of what the Lord has done for us.
Give thanks.”

And I go in peace,
Not knowing but trusting
The God of everything.
Falling but not afraid.
