Words in Our Bellies

When Michael and Lily moved into ZOOM House they visited the ZOOM Ahead Shed and chose furniture and housewares for their new apartment. Then they found out about the food shelf at Zion and shopped for groceries to make each month’s resources go a little further. Then they learned living at ZOOM House includes a YMCA membership. Playing at the Y became part of their weekly routine and they met many neighbors they wouldn’t otherwise know.

Soon Lily came to worship at Zion and asked if she and Michael could come by for Holy Communion on weekdays. Lily would echo the Lord’s Prayer one line at a time until she could say it with rhythm in English. Michael listened closely for weeks until he started whispering along. Now he knows the Words of Institution and greets me with, “Peace be with you, Pastor Meta”.

Michael got into an affordable preschool program today, so Lily is thrilled. We jumped up and down after sharing Holy Communion today because ZOOM really does feel like a fresh start and Zion really does feel like the body of Christ and spring really does seem like new life. There are signs all around us and Michael would tell you there are signs in his stomach too, “because Jesus goes with the juice into my tummy to love me inside out.”

Life is filled with transitions and trials, homes and hope. Thank goodness for God’s big promises and living words that become part of us when we keep showing up to share them day after day, week after week. I’m so glad to be showing up with you, Zion.

When I asked Lily if I could share this video on our website she said, “Of course. Share it with the whole world!”

— Gratefully, Pastor Meta
